Course Syllabus for 2009-2010
NOTE: Students received a detailed syllabus packet to take home on Thursday, August 20th. New students will receive the packet as they are added to the class. Parents, please read this packet, sign sections that should be signed/ returned with student. Thank you.
Grade Levels: 6th, 7th and 8th
Course: Accelerated Language Arts
Course Objective:
Unit Based Structure
In addition to reading and responding to various works of literature, students in Accelerated Language Arts will examine and practice various writing genres with an emphasis on developing meaningful content that is well-focused, coherent, and well-organized. They will also examine written text to learn how writers use elements of literature, literary devices, and various techniques to produce creative and meaningful text. Procedures, strategies, skills, formats, and models will be taught/reviewed first quarter. Students will use these throughout the remainder of the year.
Current Focus: Unit I instruction focuses on strategies for reading fiction and non-fiction. The first District Benchmarks test window will be October 19-22, 2009. Homework: Students copy their homework assignment on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week. Assignments are relevant either to reading comprehension/literature or writing standards currently taught. Parents should check the student's Language Arts folder, spiral, or binder for homework assignments. A folder, spiral, or binder is required for keeping organized notes and handouts for class (requirement listed in syllabus). A composition notebook (100 pages) is also required for each student.
